G.S. Harper is in studio now, recording Sixteen Winters, a full length album featuring 10 of his previously unreleased songs written over the course of the 16 years he's lived in Cleveland. The song selections reflect Harper's work over the years with different bands, different projects and different times.
"I wanted to do this record a little bit differently," said Harper. "I had some brand new songs that I had just written and I also had a lot of things that had been lying around for a long time but never recorded them. So I'm putting them together, warts and all, in one collection."
The eleventh song on the record is Love's Despair, written by Mary Cutrufello and released on her Acoustic EP (2010). "Like all of Mary's work, Love's Despair is outstanding," Harper said. "I had a vision for how to include it in Sixteen Winters and I'm so grateful to her for sharing it with me."
Sixteen Winters will have some familiar sounds to Harper's fans who have heard a few of the songs in live performances over the years. But many of them will be heard for the first time when the record is released this summer. And, they're all being recorded with full band production, unlike Harper's previous acoustic releases.
"I played all guitar, bass and sing lead vocals, but the project is really coming together with the incredible work of some of the finest musicians in the Cleveland area who are working with me on this project," said Harper. "And, with the mastery of my engineer, Curtis Leonard."
Leonard's PlaYRoOm Recording has been a home away from home for Harper during the early part of 2014 as he is recording Sixteen Winters, which is his fourth release. Harper's previous albums were Waiting For April (2002), Live From Cleveland (G.S. Harper and the Lonesome Tomatoes, 2006), and The Belmont Sessions (G.S. Harper with Andrew Zeager, 2008).
